What Is a Galaxy?

A galaxy is a vast collection of stars, dust, gas, dark matter, and cosmic objects bound by gravity. The universe contains billions of galaxies, each with unique structures and compositions. Our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is just one of them, containing over 100 billion stars.



How Galaxies Form

Galaxies are believed to have formed about 13 billion years ago from small density fluctuations in the early universe. These fluctuations caused gas clouds to collapse under gravity, forming the first stars and star clusters. Over time, these merged into larger structures, eventually becoming full-fledged galaxies.

Types of Galaxies

Astronomers classify galaxies into several types based on shape and structure:

  • Spiral Galaxies: Like the Milky Way, these have a flat, rotating disk with arms spiraling outward.

  • Elliptical Galaxies: Round or oval-shaped with little gas and dust, containing older stars.

  • Irregular Galaxies: No defined shape, often chaotic, formed by gravitational interactions or collisions.

  • Lenticular Galaxies: A mix of spiral and elliptical features, with a central bulge and disk but no spiral arms.

Galactic Collisions and Mergers

Galaxies are not static; they interact, collide, and merge over time. These cosmic events can trigger bursts of star formation or radically change a galaxy’s shape. The Milky Way is currently on a collision course with the Andromeda Galaxy, predicted to merge in about 4.5 billion years.



Dark Matter and Galaxies

Much of a galaxy’s mass is made up of dark matter, an invisible substance that does not emit light but exerts gravitational pull. It plays a crucial role in galaxy formation, rotation, and stability. Without dark matter, galaxies as we know them couldn’t exist.

Why Studying Galaxies Matters

Understanding galaxies helps scientists explore the origins of the universe, the lifecycle of stars, and the behavior of gravity on a cosmic scale. Galaxies are cosmic time machines, holding clues to the universe’s past and future.
